Aspects 101: Angles Between Planets

By Astrology Tarot AI Editorial · Updated 2026-08-02 · 7 min read
Summary An aspect describes the angular distance between two planets along the zodiac. It reveals whether different psychological functions in your personality support each other or need integration — one of the most distinctive parts of chart interpretation.

The Four Major Aspects

Conjunction (0°) — Two planetary energies merge and the theme is amplified. This can mean focused talent or over-identification with the same issue.

Trine (120°) — Usually considered a flowing, talent-friendly aspect where related planets cooperate naturally.

Square (90°) — A tense aspect that brings growth pressure and inner friction; integration often takes conscious effort.

Opposition (180°) — A pull between two poles, often seeking balance between "this side vs. that side," and commonly linked to projection in relationship themes.

Orb

In practice, planetary angles rarely land exactly at 0° or 90°. Astrologers use an "orb" — a few degrees of leeway within which an aspect still counts. Different planets and aspects use different orbs; software handles this automatically, so you only need to notice which combinations are highlighted.

How to Read "Hard" Aspects

Squares and oppositions are not "bad." They often point to the areas where you feel most motivated to grow: for example, Moon square Saturn may show cautious emotional expression, but it can also build remarkable emotional resilience. Astrology Tarot AI reads charts as mirrors for self-exploration — never with fear-based language.

Aspects and Synastry

Aspects between two people's charts (synastry) reveal interaction patterns, but natal aspects remain the foundation for understanding yourself. Start with your own major aspects before layering on how you combine with someone else.

Reference note · Aspect angles are based on astronomically calculated longitude differences; interpretation is for understanding inner patterns, not deterministic prediction of relationships or events.
